About thirty minutes after takeoff, JetBlue Flight 2017 — headed for Port of Spain — was forced to return to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily restricted U.S. carriers from operating in parts of the region.
Overnight, the FAA issued NOTAMs (Notices to Air Missions) covering portions of the Curacao, Maiquetia, Piarco, and San Juan Flight Information Regions. The directives prohibit U.S. commercial operators from flying in these areas at any altitude without prior authorization, citing “safety-of-flight” concerns linked to ongoing military operations. U.S. military and state aircraft, along with foreign carriers, are exempt. The restrictions are expected to remain in place until Sunday.
Despite the FAA notices, Defence Minister Wayne Sturge confirmed that Trinidad and Tobago’s airspace remains open, noting that the FAA has no authority over local operations. Caribbean Airlines also reported that its flights continue as scheduled and encouraged customers to sign up for real-time updates on its website.
