PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – One of Trinidad and Tobago’s most prominent businessmen, Dominic Hadeed, Chairman and Managing Director of Blue Waters Products Limited, and his wife, Genevieve Hadeed, remain at the centre of an unfolding police investigation after officers detained the couple following coordinated searches at their Westmoorings residence and a business location in Trincity.
The operation, carried out by officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), has generated widespread public interest, not only because of Hadeed’s standing within the local business community, but also because investigators have remained notably tight-lipped regarding the nature of the inquiry.
According to the TTPS, search warrants issued by the Supreme Court were executed at multiple locations as part of an ongoing investigation. During the operation, officers seized several electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptop computers, before taking the couple into custody to assist investigators.
Despite the high-profile nature of the arrests, police have repeatedly stressed that no criminal charges have been laid against either Dominic or Genevieve Hadeed.
Limited Information Released
Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro confirmed the detention of the couple but declined to provide additional details regarding the investigation. Similarly, officials speaking during a media briefing stated they were unable to answer questions surrounding the matter, citing the active nature of the investigation.
The TTPS has maintained that persons may be detained to assist with inquiries without this constituting evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
In an official statement, the Police Service reiterated that detention for investigative purposes is a standard policing procedure and should not be interpreted as a finding of guilt or adverse inference against any individual.
Legal Team Engaged
Senior Counsel Gilbert Peterson has confirmed that he forms part of the legal team representing the Hadeeds. Former Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi, SC, has also been identified as part of the legal representation.
Peterson confirmed that the couple spent the day in police custody following their detention and indicated that they had been moved between police facilities during the investigative process.
Their attorneys are expected to ensure that their constitutional rights and due process protections are fully observed while the investigation continues.
Investigation Expands
As the investigation progressed, police detained a third individual—a 69-year-old businesswoman from Westmoorings—to assist investigators.
Authorities have not identified the woman publicly, although multiple media reports indicate she is believed to be a relative of the Hadeed family.
The TTPS again emphasized that no charges have been laid against the woman and cautioned against drawing conclusions while investigations remain ongoing.
The detention of a third individual has fuelled public speculation that investigators may be examining a wider network of individuals connected to the matter. However, police have refused to comment on the scope or objectives of the investigation.
Public and Business Community React
The detention of one of the country’s most recognizable business leaders has sent shockwaves throughout Trinidad and Tobago’s business community.
Dominic Hadeed has long been regarded as one of the country’s leading entrepreneurs through his leadership of Blue Waters Products Limited, one of the Caribbean’s largest beverage manufacturers. Over the years, he has also held several leadership positions within the private sector and has been involved in national discussions on economic development and business policy.
Business associates have largely remained silent since news of the detention broke, with many declining public comment while awaiting further information from investigators.
Former Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith urged members of the public to allow investigators to complete their work without undue speculation.
He noted that in high-profile investigations, police often release limited information until charges are laid, if any become necessary.
Political Context
The investigation comes less than two weeks after Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar publicly endorsed statements made by Attorney General John Jeremie that no individual or sector of society is beyond the reach of the law.
While some commentators have attempted to link the investigation to those earlier remarks, government officials have not suggested any connection, and police have not disclosed the reasons for the investigation.
Authorities continue to insist that the matter should not be politicized while inquiries remain active.
Calls for Transparency
The limited amount of information released by investigators has prompted calls from sections of the public for greater transparency.
Legal observers note that while police must protect the integrity of ongoing investigations, prolonged detention without charges often attracts heightened public scrutiny, particularly where prominent public figures are involved.
At the same time, legal experts caution that premature disclosure of investigative details could compromise evidence, prejudice future proceedings, or unfairly damage reputations should no charges ultimately result.
Investigation Continues
As of publication, neither Dominic Hadeed, Genevieve Hadeed, nor the third detained businesswoman has been charged with any offence.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has stated that the investigation remains active and that additional information will only be released when appropriate.
For now, the matter remains one of the country’s most closely watched investigations, with the business community, legal fraternity, and the wider public awaiting clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the detention and whether any criminal charges will ultimately arise.
Until then, the presumption of innocence remains applicable to all individuals involved, and authorities continue to emphasize that detention alone does not constitute proof of wrongdoing.
