BARRACKPORE, Trinidad — Police are investigating the death of a 75-year-old woman who was found bound and unresponsive inside her Barrackpore home early Saturday, in what investigators believe may have been a fatal home invasion that ended in robbery.
The victim has been identified as Tara Bridgemohan, a pensioner who lived at Hassanali Trace.
According to investigators, Bridgemohan’s body was discovered shortly after 1:30 a.m. when her son and daughter-in-law returned to the family residence. The couple reportedly found signs that the house had been ransacked before making the grim discovery inside one of the bedrooms.
Police said the elderly woman was lying on a bed with her hands tied behind her back using black plastic tie straps. A piece of red cloth had been wrapped around her face, while additional cloth covered her mouth. Emergency responders who arrived at the scene confirmed that she had died.
Officers from the Barrackpore Police Station responded and secured the property while crime scene investigators conducted an examination of the home.
Preliminary investigations suggest that intruders gained entry by forcing their way through a window before searching the house. Initial assessments indicate that an undisclosed quantity of cash and jewellery was stolen.
Investigators have not yet determined exactly when the attack occurred. However, relatives told police that Bridgemohan was last seen alive at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday before family members left to operate their nearby business. They returned several hours later to find the home in disarray.
The discovery has left residents of the quiet Barrackpore community shaken, with many expressing concern over the apparent targeting of an elderly woman inside her own home.
Police have not announced any arrests and are continuing to process evidence collected from the scene. Investigators are expected to review forensic evidence and interview potential witnesses as they work to identify those responsible.
Bridgemohan’s body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St. James, where an autopsy is expected to determine the precise cause of death.
The investigation remains ongoing.
