As part of Fire Prevention Month, the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS), in collaboration with Interchem Limited and other Stakeholders, hosted a successful Fire Safety Pop-Up Event that attracted an enthusiastic crowd eager to learn more about fire prevention and safety preparedness.

Held at the Brian Lara Promenade in Port of Spain, the event focused on raising public awareness about the importance of fire safety in homes and workplaces. Attendees had the opportunity to explore a wide range of life-saving equipment on sale—including fire alarms, extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire hoses, and emergency signage—offered by Interchem Limited..

Throughout the day, members of the public engaged with officers from the TT Fire Service and representatives from Interchem to gain valuable insights into fire prevention strategies and emergency response techniques. The highlight of the event was the live fire extinguishing demonstrations conducted by Interchem’s trained safety specialists, which drew large crowds and provided hands-on education about how to properly use fire extinguishers in different fire scenarios.

The demonstrations emphasized that owning a fire extinguisher is only half the battle—knowing how and when to use it can make the difference between a small incident and a major disaster. Many onlookers also participated, learning firsthand how to operate extinguishers safely and effectively.

Acting Divisional Fire Officer (Northern Division) Anton Blackman, praised the initiative, saying, “Fire Prevention Month is about education, empowerment, and engagement. This collaboration with Interchem allows us to bring fire safety directly to the public in a practical and interactive way.”

Interchem’s Chief Operations Officer Wade Edghill commended the partnership, noting, “We are proud to work alongside the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service to promote safety awareness. Our goal is to make essential fire protection equipment accessible and to ensure that every person knows how to use it.”

In addition to product sales and demonstrations, the TT Fire Service distributed educational brochures on fire safety tips, home inspection checklists, and emergency contact information. Children and families also enjoyed interactive sessions with fire officers, who stressed the importance of early warning systems and safe evacuation plans.

The pop-up event was hailed as a major success by both organizers and attendees, who praised its informative and engaging approach to fire safety education. With strong public participation and growing awareness, the TT Fire Service and Interchem reaffirmed their commitment to building a culture of safety and preparedness across Trinidad and Tobago.

Also in attendance were Fire Chief Andy Hutchinson and Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander.

The Fire Prevention Month pop-up served as a timely reminder that fire safety begins with knowledge, preparation, and the right equipment—and that everyone has a role to play in protecting lives and property.
