Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar today secured the support of the United States of America for the development of Trinidad and Tobago’s cross-border hydrocarbon resources.
This commitment was obtained during high-level talks with U.S. Secretary of State, the Honourable Marco Rubio, held this morning at the State Department in Washington D.C., at the invitation of the U.S. Government.
The discussions addressed several key areas of mutual interest, including:
(a) National Security
(b) Energy Security
(c) Economic Security
Secretary Rubio expressed appreciation for the Prime Minister and her Government’s strong political and technical leadership. Both leaders reaffirmed the close and enduring partnership between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States.

Secretary Rubio met with Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar to reaffirm the strong U.S.–Trinidad and Tobago partnership, with particular emphasis on regional security and counternarcotics cooperation. He commended Trinidad and Tobago’s ongoing efforts to combat Transnational Criminal Organizations and reduce illicit narcotics and firearms trafficking.
The leaders also discussed joint initiatives to restore stability in Haiti, including support for the UN Security Council resolution authorizing the establishment of a UN Support Office for Haiti and a Gang Suppression Force.
Acknowledging the vital role of energy security in Trinidad and Tobago’s economic growth and regional stability, Secretary Rubio reaffirmed U.S. backing for the Government’s Dragon Gas proposal, while ensuring safeguards to prevent significant benefit to the Maduro regime.
He further underscored that deepening U.S.–Trinidad and Tobago cooperation will be essential to disrupting narcotrafficking networks, enhancing regional security, and protecting the wider region.
