Illegal Firearm, Ammunition and Cannabis Seized in Central Division- Two Arrested
In an ongoing effort to rid the streets of illegal firearms and ammunition and restore public safety, officers of the National Special Operations Unit (NSOU) conducted a targeted intelligence-led operation in the Central Division between 7:00 p.m. on Thursday 25th September 2025 and 3:00 a.m. on Friday 26th September 2025.
The exercise, which took place in the Las Lomas (Police Post) district, was conducted under the leadership of ACP, Criminal Division Richard Smith and spearheaded by ASP St. Clair.
Based on intelligent information received regarding the presence of illegal firearms and ammunition, NSOU officers intercepted a white Nissan AD Wagon along Caroni South Bank Road, St. Helena. The vehicle was driven by a 27-year-old labourer of El Carmen Village, St. Helena. The lone passenger was identified as a 19-year-old unemployed Spanish national residing at Ross Trace, St. Helena.
Following the interception, officers proceeded to search the residence of the driver under Section 12 of the Emergency Powers Regulations, 2025. During the search, officers discovered:
- One (1) black Fuerzas Armadas de Venezuela pistol
- Two (2) loaded magazines containing a total of 22 rounds of 9mm ammunition
- A quantity of cannabis, which, upon weighing, amounted to 1.5 kilograms with an estimated street value of TT$30,000
The driver was arrested at the scene.
Subsequently, the residence of the passenger was also searched under Section 12 of the Emergency Powers Regulations. No illegal items were found at his premises; however, he was detained pending further enquiries.
Investigations are being led by PC Juman of the National Special Operations Unit.
Both individuals are currently in custody at the Arouca and Freeport Police Stations, respectively.
